Your music is transcendent, and you're helping me get through some really difficult times right now. Thanks for that.

music is a great healer. it's the only thing that gets me through the day.
i hope things turn brighter for you very soon.

hey chris
i was just dropping into say hello. when you released 'true love waits' you had a little gathering at your house that I came down to, and treated a group of us to a beautiful evening of music. my g\f at the time asked you for the sheet music and you graciously gave her a working copy of your arrangements. i'm glad to see since then "Hold Me To This" and the album of Elliot Smith reimaginations. I love your piano work, beautiful :). You definately helped put a prospective of the arts for me... the amount of dedication and hard work it takes, along with its sacraficial nature. I really hope all is well :). cheers.

hey! i remember!
thanks for coming by, to the house, and here to the site.
i thank you for your kind words and hope that all is well with you and yours.
cheers
chris

definetly love the radiohead cd's, and you should do more of those!

thanks.
i've done 'punchdrunk lovesick singalong' since my last radiohead-devoted cd came out, and there are a couple of other songs i'd still like to do, but i can't imagine doing another entire cd made up of radiohead songs.
nonetheless, i appreciate your enthusiasm.
thanks very much.

Hey, It was great to find your website today as I gave my boyo your radiohead cd for his birthday last week and we're both loving it. This was after our friends got married recently and the blushing bride walked in to one of the tracks, it was perfect.
I've been an elliot smith fan for years now and I was so glad to read that you have a cd of his work out. I was just wondering if you have released it in the UK yet as I can't seem to find it. Also are you playing in the Uk any time soon. Be great to see you live. Many thanks
Ruth

i'm not sure whether the elliott smith cd has been released in the u.k., but i imagine amazon has it as an import.
more frugally, i think I'M still offering it here on my STORE page at a decent price with free shipping. can't do better than that. order it before i wise up!
warm regards,
chris

Dear Mr. O'Riley,

I very much enjoy your solo piano arrangements of Readiohead's music.

I'm in the process of finishing up my first CD of solo piano music containing improvised "covers" of jazz and pop standards.

I would very much like to include a spontaneous arrangement of "Exit Music For a Film" I've recorded. I used your sheet music as a kind of "lead sheet" (for melody, harmony and some of your specific voicings) but I gave the tune a "3 feel" (the 4/4 bars actually sound more like 12/8) and I also solo over part of the head.

I'm new to this, but I want to be sure to get all required permissions before releasing this (independent) album. I know I'll need a mechanical license from the songwriter--i.e., RadioHead (e.g., through Harry Fox), but do I also need to seek permission from you since my improvised arrangement is based (in part) on your written arrangement? Even if I don't need strict legal permission from you, would you be OK with me using your arrangement in this manner?

Please feel free to respond privately for any additional information via the email address I provided.

Thank you.

Mike

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of what your doing. Keep it up!

Best regards
Matt

thanks, matt!

Dear Chris,

Years ago in architecture school at Virginia Tech, someone broke open my footlocker and stole one of my most treasured discs (I believe it was your debut CD) with your excellent recording of the Roger Sessions Piano Sonata No.1.

If you might be able to help me get a hold of one, I would appreciate it. No luck at Amazon.com and it appears to be out of print. Maybe New World?

I would never have considered listening to Sessions had I not heard your recording.

Thanks ever so much,

Dave

P.S.: Would love to see a disc of pre-WWII American composers, esp. early Ross Lee Finney. Some beautiful stuff out there.

Chris O'Riley:
"From The Top" is not open? I want to tape the Corighiono "Fifths to Thirds" piece -- there is no (Tower, others) cat logue listing for this. Correct/not correct?
Your interpretations of Rameau are available on CD? What of Frank Zappa tunes?
Keep up the excellent work.

harry-
the fromthetop site is occasionally down, but i'm not even sure whether the corigliano show has aired. it's only after that point that the shows are archived. the piece for piano is one part of john's 'etude-fantasy' which i'm sure you'll find on amazon somewhere.
my rameau performances crop up on my first cd of break-pieces originally broadcast on fromthetop, 'at the break'. that recording is available on amazon or right here on my STORE page. it's got lots of rachmaninoff, some mozart, chopin, maxwell-davies, guastavino, et al. it's a nice collection.
haven't done any frank zappa just yet. something to look forward to. i have a soft spot for 'peaches en regalia'
thanks for writing.
best wishes,
chris

Hello. i just purchased 'hold me to this' which frankly is quite amazing. i was wondering if your releasing a sheet music book to hold me to this, as i really want to play your adaptations. i play myself and am a keen classical pianist, as well as jazz, please could you get in touch with me. thankyou jamie

Jamie-
Thanks for being in touch. I’m really gald you’re enjoying ‘hold me to this’. I have, in fact, had a volume published which includes arrangements from that album AND my previous one, True love Waits. It’s a big book, with illustrations on every page by the fellow who did the cover art for those albums, Steve Byram. I had it printed myself, so it’s only available at my website, christopheroriley.com, on the STORE page. I ship worldwide. I think the arrangements are pretty hard to play, even for me, but one thing I did was to arrange the book in order of difficulty, so if you start at the beginning, there’s a good chance you’ll start picking up a few tricks of my technique, which will in turn make each successive arrangement easier to play. It’s a book I’m very proud of, and I hope you’ll decide to give it a try. In the meantime, thanks again for your kind words about the album.
Best wishes,
Christopher

do you ever think of playing any
Belle and Sebastian songs. they would be splendid.

haven't really listened to tem in a long time. thanks for the thought.
cheers,
chris

Hey Chris-

This is Virginia from HOA. How are things? You probably don't remember me telling you about an orchestra that was going to be premiering a piece of mine, a first for me. Well, that happened yesterday. I got to conduct the piece as well. It was just incredible for me. The piece was a smashing success, and I left that concert feeling so inspired that I could do anything I put my mind to.

Also, I was planning to go to the concerts you are doing in Oregon in August, both the one in Sunriver, and the one in Bend. So I was hoping there is somewhere I can get some more information about those concerts.

paris is one of the only place at present where there might be something on the horizon! i would cherish the chance to play in paris soon.

Hey Chris, you might remember me for asking whether the sheetmusic ordering site was still working. I am sorry if when we conversed that I did not tell you how much I admire the Radiohead recordings! I am rather angry at the moment as one of my friends got a free ticket to Radiohead's new preview gigs only to return to say 'They're shit'! Unapreciative git! Anyway, I asked if you would be doing any gigs in the UK and having not heard from you I assume that's not soon! I move to Cyprus in under a month and I was wondering if you were going to be part of the wave of pianists that seem to be performing there recently! Desperate last ditch attempt but oh well! Also can we expect anymore radiohead stuff after the new album (provided it is playable on piano and that half the tracks arn't just beats!) or even perhaps of Thoms solo work? Understandable if not because if I were you I might be afriad of becoming 'that radiohead pianist' forever, but please keep us posted on any other projects! Have you recorded or are you going to record anymore standard classical/romantic repertoire soon, i.e. Rachmaninov, Debussy or even more Beethoven? Perhaps a FAQ would get rid of annoying people like myself!!! Thanks once again Chris,

Andy

andy-
sorry to lose you to cyprus; i'm hoping you're going there for better times or great things. i'm sorry to say i've no immediate plans to be in the UK. i also am just now warming to the new radiohead songs as a result of some superb concert footage shot at the second wolverhampton gig. i had no previous affection for 'house of cards', 'open pick' 'arpeggi', and now i'm really looking forward to seeing the band play them live. i also have subsequently heard another new song, 'videotape', which i immediately warmed to. i don't see any new radiohead piano things coming from me soon. i'm quite immersed in nick drake at the moment, probably recording in the late summer for a released the following year (and i've been touring my elliott smith tribute in the meantime, with great pleaseure). there's also some talk about finally getting ot record my beloved shostakovich preludes & fuges, a massive three-disc project which may see the light of day as perhaps a per-track release? stranger things have happened. i'd quite look forward to getting those pieces down on tape. if you don't know them, they're something to look forward to hearing for the first time, believe me. also, i'll be touring messiaen's 'la reveil des oiseaux' with orchestra in the coming year. it seems like becoming an exciting time.
i hope the same holds true for you.
best wishes,
christopher

I'm incredibly excited with the possibility of seeing you live/in-person here in Canada in early July (Montreal Jazz Festival). Your Radiohead interpretations have been emotionally/spiritually rewarding for me like nothing else I've ever heard -- thank you for sharing your gift with the world.

As someone who has never been lucky enough to see you in concert, how long do they usually last? Do you have a set-list in mind at this point? The MJF website gives the impression that your shows will focus on Radiohead, but I can't help but think some of your Elliott Smith work will also be featured. Am I looking for THE set-list? That would be cheating. *grin* Perhaps half 'n half? In any case, best wishes for you and those around you, from a fan in Newfoundland.

My dream would be to learn one of your adapted Radiohead songs on the piano. I am a big Radiohead fan, and have been playing Classical for about 8 years. I had my teacher "Ronald Kmeic", don't know if you've heard of him, listen to your Karma Police but he says that he would need to see the sheet music before he could know if it was possible to teach it to me. As far as I know the only way for him to see it is if I pay the full 78$ to get a book. Is there any chance you'd be releasing transcripts of individual pieces through an online service, or will I have to give up my dream?!?!

ben-
with the warner-chappell agreement for my arrangements as it stands, it would have been onerous to publish each song seperately. you're better off buying the whole book, believe me.
i hope you'll consider it.
best wishes,
chris

Alas, I was afraid this was the only option. I will think it over. By the way, do you listen to Muse? Very talented guys, inspired by both Nirvana and Radiohead, making for a really interesting sound.

i've given muse a listen or two, and though i definitely see an affinity in their styles, backrounds and inspirations, i've yet to warm to muse.
cheers,
chris

What do you think of the new Radiohead material? I think it is the best Radiohead material ever.

Dear Mr. O'Riley,
I love your work and I just wanted to pass along a link to my latest
project that I recently launched with my design partner Nick Lovegrove:
www.concertotable.com

You were definitely an inspiration in the thinking that went into this piece.
Please check it out when you have a moment.
Thanks and keep up the wonderful work.
Best,
Demian Repucci

hello.

i just listened to your music in napster. i am a big radiohead and elliott smith fan.

i just love your versions of these great songs!!!

bye.

thanks, matthias.

Hi Chris!

many years....heard your shows - wonderful!! Really great work! I am in Europe mostly. Still remember that "Busoni '81"....your generosity and friendship...Would be glad to hear from you.

Best wishes,
Lev

lev-
i'm so happy to hear from you. i think often of our days and talks together, and hearing your wonderful playing at bolzano.
i'm working hard now on 'carnaval' (first time for me), some rachmaninoff etudes, and my beloved shostakovich preludes & fugues. i wish i could play them for you.
be well and happy. and let me know whether my calendar ever sheds light on when we will see each other again.
best always,
christopher

I listen to you all the time. I understand your mother is connected with radio station WQED in Pittsburgh. I do not know anything about your background. In spite of your great renown, you are not listed in Grove Dictionary of Music and want to know something about your biography. When and where were you born. Where did you go to school, who did you train with and when did you first get your break into big time.
Also do you have any faculty positions or permanent conducting positions.

mark-
my mother used to manage WQED in pittsburgh. her affiliation is now much more casual than it once was.
i was born in chicago in 1956. my major teacher at new england conservatory was russell sherman. i have no permanent positions, and i'm still waiting for my big break
you might check out the BIOGRAPHY page on the website if you like. also, goggle will no doubt cough up some decent articles and reviews that have come out recently.
best wishes,
chris

Your calendar lists the October 12 taping of From the Top in Tyler, TX as beginning at 8:00 pm. The people in Tyler, TX have it listed as starting at 7:00 pm. Is the concert on October 14 beginning at 7:00 pm also?

i bet you're right, that the taping is most likely at 7pm. i'll stand on tradition and say the symphony concert will begin at 8pm, but again, local wisdom is most likely more dependable than mine.
best wishes,
chris

i was wondering if you are coming out w/ the sheet music for the hold me to this album if you could email me back on this that would be great as i might not check this board for a while. i really wanna play gagging order its soo beatiful! thanks alot - michael

Chris,

Some time ago you were on NPR promoting your first Radiohead music CD. Coincidentally, I had recently discovered Radiohead and was growing to love them myself. Then you went and said something like "Radiohead is all I listen to in my spare time," as an explanation for your shift in what you were playing as a pianist (i.e., a different direction than say Bach, Mozart, etc.). So I picked up your CD and loved it. Listened often. Then found the second Radiohead CD and loved that too. More recently, I found myself on TheSmokingGun.com reading a piece about the suspicious circumstances surounding the death of Elliott Smith. I didn't know ES, but the piece mentioned he sounded somewhat like Nick Drake, another favorite of mine. I bought a CD, then another, and another. Now I have all of ES's CDs and love them. And then I find out you've released an ES tribute albumn. The coincidences continue. Of course I picked it up and love it too. So I thought I'd cut to the chase and just ask you - what are you listening to these days? My guess is I'll like it. And thanks - I love your interpretations of all these pieces. I look forward to your next project.

Russell.

russell-
i'm so glad your elliott smith curiosity was well-rewarded as i would hope it would be; i love everything i hear of his, from the gorgeous studio offerings, to the live tracks (you should haunt soulseek for those--there are endless and fascinating bootlegs from all aspects of his too-short performing career), the demos and unreleased material.
i'm still fascinated with radiohead these days, as the band is touring new material. there's even a song i'm working on now that they've been playing just since 18 may: 'videotape'. it's a stunner.
as far as long-term projects go, i hope you'll be happy to note i'll be in the studio in late summer for an all-nick drake disc, to be released in '07.
great minds think alike, i guess.
best wishes,
chris
